Student Ownership of Learning

During the second semester, students will have a thorough understanding of their own data that they are graphing and tracking in their Personal Best Binders.

Students will conference with their teachers after Discovery A, interim I, II and III and use their own data to set appropriate goals for the next assessment. Teachers will discuss the tests in detail with students and help them to develop action plans based on data and information provided during discussion.

Students will share this information during parent conferences, which will be student led at Columbia. Scripts will be provided for practice, but basically students will share their data and their action plan with their parents. Parents will be informed that students need to attend the conferences.

School wide recognition assemblies will be developed at Columbia this school year. Students will be recognized for growth, goal reaching and following the Seven Habits (which is also graphed in Personal Best Binders).

A Hall of Fame Goal Reachers board will be created. Students who reach goals they set themselves, will be called up on the intercom to have their pictures taken and put on the Hall of Fame. Administrators will talk to each goal reacher to ask them how they reached their goals and to congratulate them. They are also challenged at this time to reach their next goal….

Classrooms will celebrate every time that they reach classroom goals or grow on their CFAs, interims or Discovery assessments. Celebrations will be quick, simple and child-chosen (ie- celebration jar).

Students will be sent to the office every time that they show growth or make a good choice. Office staff will praise them and call parents.

Leaders in Action luncheons will occur once a month. Students who were selected (randomly) from the “I Got Caught Using the Habits” box will eat lunch on the stage with administrators, previous teachers, counselors, outside community guests. Students will eat on china plates on beautifully decorated tables in front of their peers.

  1. My child loves the celebrations. She was part of the Leadership luncheon and couldn't quit talking about it- before or after! The crew at Columbia has worked so hard to turn things around. Kids do own their learning and are so proud of what they do.They are treated with such respect and with such high expectations.
